Sharif Group’s roots can be traced back to the year 1939. From its humble beginnings as a small steel melting unit, it has spanned multiple generations and expanded into a massive business conglomerate with its foothold in industries like sugar, power, milk & dairy, feed, poultry and even plastics.

R amzan Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) was incorporated in 1990 as public limited company (unquoted). We manufacture and market white refined sugar and its byproducts-molasses and bagasse. Commercial production was launched in 1991. Today, we have installed state of the art plant & machinery and our unit is located at 26 kms, Jhang road, Chiniot, with a crushing capacity of 9000 TCD.

RSML has constantly been involved in balancing, modernization and replacement (BMR) activities over the past many years in order to achieve its energy conservation goals by adding sophisticated and up to date machinery such as falling film evaporators, electric driven motors and the DCS system. Today we are proud to have a fully automated and an exceptionally efficient plant which has helped us reach a higher net worth.

As the saying goes: “Sugar is produced in the fields”. RSML has created an agri-development wing called Ramzan Sugarcane Development Farms (RSDF). Under the ambit of RSDF we research on the latest agri-practices and test various cane varieties that are most suitable for the mills gate area. During the last many years, RSDF has persistently collaborated with various national and international research institutions in order to modernize cane farming methods in the vicinity.

We at RSDF believe that success comes to those who will and dare. We have been able to bring revolutionary change in sugar cane cultivation and management methods which has enhanced the production yield by at least 20%, ultimately benefiting the farmer and the mills. RSDF also showcases best practices in agri-sciences at its own farms, spread over 1500 acres, in the vicinity of Ramzan Sugar Mills, we call them RSDF-Model Farms.

RSML has also collaborated with various top notch fertilizer and pesticide companies in order to provide correct and timely doses of inputs to cane farmers at the lowest possible cost on both cash and credit basis. RSML has also invented the concept of “Agri-Mart” which is a one stop shop located inside the mills, providing not only best quality inputs to the growers but also complete guidance and advice for their day to day operational issues. Today this concept is being copied by various sugar mills in the industry.

RSML CSR Program

We at RSML are engaged in various CSR activities particularly in the areas of education and health care. One example is RSML’s collaboration with CARE foundation to run various primary level schools in the nearby locality in order to provide education to the underprivileged children.

Shamim Sharif dispensary is another example where walk-in OPD patients are treated 24/7 and provided with free medical advice and medication by qualified doctors.

RSML-Health Safety and Environment (HSE):

We at RSML have an extremely stringent approach towards the implementation of HSE policies. Anyone found not adhering to the safety policies and procedures can face serious ramifications.

This is another example of our forward looking approach. Under this program we collaborate with the top universities of Pakistan and hire management trainees for a two year training program. Under this program they are provided with accommodation and given the best learning opportunities. After successful completion of the program we offer them a permanent managerial position.

Our zest to perform better can also be seen in the certifications we have acquired over the years. Our “Food Safety System Certification FSSC 22000”, “QMS-ISO 9001-2008” and “Halal Certification PS 3733” has enabled us to compete for the supply of quality sugar to local and international beverage industries, pharmaceuticals and other FMCG companies.

S Sharif Feed Mills Pvt. Limited (SFML) started its operations in 2007. For the past decade we have been manufacturing quality animal feed for poultry and dairy animals. Located at 13-Km, Hujra-Renala Road Shergarh, Okara, Sharif Feed Mills has a production capacity of 15000 tons per month.

Since its inception, SFML been an example for the rest of the industry-when we managed to complete our erection within the stipulated time of a few months only. This was a first time occurrence in the industry. Today our plant is spread out on 25 acres in the district of Okara, which is known as the “House of Grains”.

We at SFML pride ourselves in producing all types of feed for poultry, large animals and fancy birds. We are pioneers in pushing forward the concept of hygienic bird feed in Pakistan and our poultry and dairy products are available in most parts of Punjab.

Raw Materials

Our silos for grain storage have a total capacity of 50,000 tons. Grain and grain by-products constitute 65% of the feed. Major grains used include corn, rice, millet, sorghum, wheat, wheat
bran, and rice polish. Among these, corn has a 70% share.
Vegetable protein meals constitute 30% of the feed. Major meals include soybean meal, canola meal, rapeseed meal, sunflower meal and guar meal. These meals are the by-products of the solvent industry.

Concerned with the current developments in the bird feed industry of Pakistan, SFML has made it a point not to compromise on the quality of its feed & enhance the production capacity simultaneously.

T he addition of a dairy farm to the portfolio of Sharif Group was formalised when Sharif Dairy Farms (Private Limited) was incorporated on November 17 th 2008. This diversification enterprise has been lucrative for the group, both financially and as an additional opportunity to influence Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

With a rapidly growing population, food security and affordability are of great importance to the future prosperity and stability of the country as a whole. It may surprise many to learn that Pakistan is currently the 4 th largest milk producing country in the world, producing 42 billion litres last year in 2016, with a financial impact equivalent to 11% of the GDP. This is quite an impressive contribution to the national economy from one sector.

The downside of Pakistan’s dairy industry is that it is largely unregulated and consequently, a very large majority of the produce is of dubious nutritional and hygienic quality. While most of the population have adequate energy intake according to World Health Organization guidelines, there is a substantial proportion who do not get sufficient daily intakes of protein, minerals and vitamins necessary to support good health. Milk and dairy products offer an economical solution to this shortage and help raise the health parameters of the lower income brackets in the society.

A combination of the above factors led to the decision to vertically integrate the dairy farm with a processing facility, to produce a range of high quality, hygienic and nutritionally beneficial foods.

Unfortunately, milk is not only good food for people, it also provides a perfect medium for bacterial growth (Please see the diagram). Many of the bacteria that thrive in milk are harmful to people so the decision to pasteurise raw milk as the first stage in processing was taken for extra guarantee of food safety. The aim is for all of the milk to be produced on our own farm and processed in our own factory giving complete quality assurance.

The farm presently contains around 3,000 animals producing up to 40,000 litres of milk daily. Our growth is organic since we use born on the farm, Pakistani bred heifers. Our target is to reach a total of around 5000 milking cows, with a further 5000 young animals, to support the maintenance of herd numbers, and allow us to sell some very high quality animals to small farmers to develop their production capabilities and therefore profitability of their own farms as well. This target should be achieved 5 to 7 years from now, when we expect to be producing around 125,000 litres daily.

The key to creating a sustainable dairy farming business lies in animal welfare. The motto of our farm is “Healthy, Happy Cows for Nutritious Milk”. To this end we have a highly experienced international dairy farm manager overseeing the training and development of our own Pakistani veterinary and farm management teams. With a focus on nutrition, health, the reproduction cows, and an eye for detail, we ensure our customers get a top quality product.

This training and development is imparted at all staff levels and these good habits are taken home by all our staff members, some of whom have their own animals, or family members with small farms. They naturally discuss our methods and by adopting the relevant processes they improve their businesses and standards of living.

This idea of leading by example is a tangible part of the Sharif Group vision and we make many conscious decisions in daily farm management, which may result in compromising on certain technologically advanced methods, to support our suppliers and neighbours. For example, we require around 20,000 tons of maize for silage annually, and to guarantee best quality and smooth supply we could invest in around 600 acres of our own land and implement highly mechanised techniques. But this would adversely impact the surrounding population. In effect, we would cause around 100 to 200 local families to lose their source of income and that is not in the interest of the rural population, so we go for the difficult but sustainable route and support our neighbours. We also contribute to local schools and health care facilities with our sister businesses on the site.

As part of our future planning, we have decided to develop the business synergistically by using the products and by-products of our sister concerns and providing them with a very stable base customer and the opportunity to use some of our own products and by-products in their business inputs. For instance, we have solar panels on the roofs of our sheds which produces a source of low cost, environmentally sustainable energy for our own use and some additional energy which is supplied to meet the needs of our milk and sugar businesses. Please see the diagram below to view our vision of transforming from a milk supplier to a business with nine varied income streams.

S harif Milk Products (Pvt.) Limited was incorporated on 7th September, 2011. We are engaged in the processing and marketing of pasteurized milk and milk products of the highest quality under the brand name-Anhaar.

The word “Anhaar” literally translates to-the river (Referring to the rivers in paradise). Anhaar as a brand has become synonymous with quality milk free from steroids, breeding hormones and any other impurities. Our milk supply comes from our own dairy farms housing over 3000
Australian Friesian cows.

Our farms are located at the outskirts of Punjab, the fodder for our cows is produced in-house and the milking of animals is done under strictly monitored hygienic conditions with automated milking parlors.

Pasteurized Milk

Our milk is pasteurized, using High Temperature Short Time (HTST) pasteurization, which means that to protect our consumers from the harmful bacteria present in raw milk, our milk goes through a time bound heating process to destroy harmful micro-organisms making it safe to consume. Pasteurization kills all the pathogenic bacteria while homogenization gives milk an evenly rich taste. This processed milk is then poured into international standard food grade bottles under hygienic controls so that the pure wholesome goodness is preserved and brought fresh to retail customers.

Unlike pasteurized milk, UHT milk is thermally processed so as to produce a product which has an extended shelf life. However, in the process many of the nutrients are eliminated. Pasteurization does not kill all micro-organisms in milk, but is intended to kill some bacteria and make some enzymes inactive making it a healthier alternative than UHT milk.

Our commitment to excellence has propelled us towards expanding our portfolio to better meet consumer needs. Therefore, Anhaar today, has an extensive range of milk products which includes not only pasteurized milk (Whole Milk, Full Cream Milk & Low Fat Milk), but also Flavored Yogurt (Strawberry, Peach, Mango), Chunky Yogurt (Strawberry), Flavored Milk (Chocolate, Strawberry, Cardamom), Desi Ghee, Raita, Laban, Yogurt (Sweet, Plain).

We recently introduced breakfast milk in the market which is the first product of its kind offering fresh cereals mixed with milk. Moreover, we were the first ones to launch Greek Yogurt in Pakistan.

We are determined to live up to our promise of serving the nation by providing preservative free and high quality products.

Potable Water

We at Sharif Group believe in broadening our horizons; with this in mind we decided to set up a plant to produce potable drinking water under our flagship brand-Anhaar. Anhaar aims to become the largest fresh foods brand in the region, hence our drinking water is obtained from a deep underground source. We ensured that our water is certified by several renowned quality assurance bodies including-PSQCA, PCSIR and SGS.

This project is based in Punjab and currently our drinking water’s portfolio carries two SKUs of 0.5 Liter and 1.5 Liters. Civil work for this project had begun in October, 2017 and this fully automated RO (Reverse Osmosis) plant with an imported filling line and a capacity of 6000 liters per hour became operational in June 2018.

Implementing cutting edge technology to bring out the best value for our customers is a part of our mission statement. We therefore believe, that this plant will be rendering a service to our community, by providing customers access to potable water. Such a project is vital to our country, considering the bulk of recent reports claiming that the arsenic level of Pakistan’s ground water is extremely high; and an alarming percentage of sold bottled water is actually contaminated. Details of the mineral contents of our bottled water can be seen below.
